As you may have heard, "They" have a saying: life begins at 40. Of course, as with most of those sorts of aphorisms, it's inaccurate. Life actually begins at 50. Anyone who has undergone that shift will be able to tell you that. And, as with most other birthdays whose year ends in a 0, an appropriate birthday celebration will likely be necessary.
Of course, there is a fine line that needs to be walked here. If you know someone who is going to be having a 50th birthday celebration, the key is to know what sort of 50th birthday party gifts to get for them. After all, some people just haven't been clued in that life isn't actually coming to an end at their 50th, so you might need to make sure that you don't just give them a gift that pokes fun at their age without first checking to make sure that they won't take offense at such a reminder of the approaching decade.
So, then, what are some of the things that one can get an acquaintance or friend or family member who is reaching that milestone? Well, if you're getting 50th birthday party gifts for someone whom you know has a good sense of humor about the whole affair, then it's fairly safe to get some sort of "gag" gift. For instance, there are those t-shirts that bear an inscription such "Hey! I'm now an old geezer!" or some such rather impertinent words. After all, if they really do have a good sense of humor about the whole thing, then they'll likely want to let the world know just how big of a sense of humor they have about it. Or, if they're not the t-shirt type, but are the coffee-drinking type, then there are always those novelty mugs.
Keep in mind that not everyone will necessarily be amenable to these sorts of novelty gifts. These people might need something a little more suited to their dignified position. Therefore, it might be a good idea to consider a more serious type of gift. For instance, it's often the case that people who have reached middle age begin to become fond of certain types of finer wine. If that's the case with your friend/acquaintance/whatever, then consider giving them a gift that plays into this passion of theirs - a nice, ornate bottle holder, for instance, or a bottle-opening kit, complete with crystal glasses. But, again, this will depend upon the person to whom you're giving the gift.
If this person of your acquaintance happens to be a lady, then maybe of all the 50th birthday party gifts, jewelry maybe the best solution. This isn't any sort of sexist posturing of "oh, women always like jewelry" or whatever - it's simply a suggestion that adding an elegant piece of jewelry to the collection of a friend of yours may be a good gift. But, of course, since the 50th is an important milestone, making it an elegant and worthwhile piece of jewelry will likely be the most appropriate option.
